Descripción enviada por el equipo del proyecto. This project was designed in light of its mission: to serve as a space for pedagogy investigation, expositions, and exchange of knowledge. The use of transparent materials and spatial interrelations allows both students and teachers to experience “live” teaching and learning while at the same time promoting a spirit of exploration and examination.

The design was defined and consolidated through the interaction between both teams: AGRA Architects and the Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería. With three stories and a basement, the building houses 42 specialized laboratories for six different engineering programs, as well as spaces for practice and experimentation, meeting rooms, and offices. The design responds to five guiding principles: interior flexibility, expansion (east-west), enlargement (towards the south), grid (modulation) and green (patios).

The building, with its main façade facing north, embraces the main central plaza- park of the university campus. The façade is composed by a wide frame (60 meters in length and 15 meters in height) pierced by two ramp-bridges as main accesses, connecting to widespread stairs arriving to the “logia”, the main level in the second floor. Towards the south, three sections of the building, as three “boxes”, are framed by a big rectangular eave. These simple shapes contribute to formal and functional clarity of the Laboratories´ Ensemble.

The “logia”, being the central circulation and distribution axis, is recovered by marquee, articulates stairs and elevators: it is a space for walking, interacting, studying; with certain sectors widened as meeting and resting places provided with appropriate furniture. The southern circulation axis is less important in hierarchy, attending supplies and permitting access to laboratories and research centers. As an invitation for the integration of activities, interior terraces and corridors as balconies over idle double and triple height interior spaces were provided.

Short closed facades (east, west), as well as eaves and ceiling of main facades are recovered by “Corten” Steel slabs with an oxide look, produced by a chemical reaction between steel and oxygen, offer at the same time impermeable protection to water and imped corrosion. Northern and southern facades are made of independent glass structures. Roofing of the “logia” is made of glass for sun catchment, operating as ventilation and temperature control.
